New Introductory Course:

"Stress and Burnout in the Health Care Professional" by Dr. Ann G. Widmer, Dean of the School of Management, Concordia University Portland
1 credit hour

Stress, stated simply, is the way an individual interprets and responds to an event. What is perceived to be stressful to one person, may be challenging and exciting to another. Not all stress is bad. Weddings, job promotions, and vacations can all produce stress, but most identify these as harmless stress events. But the stress of caregiving, in an imperfect system, can be fatiguing. Such emotional fatigue can result in burnout.

Burnout is the progressive process of fatigue and depletion of resources; energy is reduced; the possibility of investing in others diminishes.

New Course:

"Medicare Consolidated Billing" by Darla K. Watson, Consultant, Starpointe Healthcare Consulting

Medicare providers and vendors have basically ignored Consolidated Billing since its onset in 1998 when the new Medicare PPS payment system was implemented. The consequences resulted in vendors getting their monies recouped by Medicare and SNF's being billed for services rendered in the past 2-4 years.

Now we are looking face-to-face at the implications and everyone is trying to determine how to monitor services being rendered, how to communicate payor types effectively, determine what those services should cost the SNF's and as now regulated, the most efficient method to have "agreements" with every vendor prior to services being rendered for a resident in a Part A stay.
