New Course:

"Medicare Consolidated Billing" by Darla K. Watson, Consultant, RN, Starpointe Healthcare Consulting
5 credit hours

Medicare providers and vendors have basically ignored Consolidated Billing since its onset in 1998 when the new Medicare PPS payment system was implemented. The consequences resulted in vendors getting their monies recouped by Medicare and SNF's being billed for services rendered in the past 2-4 years.

Now we are looking face-to-face at the implications and everyone is trying to determine how to monitor services being rendered, how to communicate payor types effectively, determine what those services should cost the SNF's and as now regulated, the most efficient method to have "agreements" with every vendor prior to services being rendered for a resident in a Part A stay.

Identity Theft: Don't Be a Victim

Whether you employ hundreds of people or just a few, if someone is the victim of identity theft - it affects productivity. Here is information so your employees can learn how to protect their identity, particularly their Social Security number.

If an employee thinks someone is misusing their Social Security number, they should call the Social Security Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271.

They should also file a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Identity Theft Hotline by calling 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338). The FTC tracks complaints and will refer your employee's victim complaint to the appropriate law enforcement agency to investigate and prosecute identity thieves.

In addition to the help employees can receive by contacting the fraud hotlines, Social Security can -

  • Help them correct their earnings record, if it is compromised,
  • Issue a replacement card, if their Social Security card was stolen,
  • Determine whether they need a new Social Security number, and
  • Give them information from their credit record. Social Security cannot fix credit records.

Your employees can help prevent theft of their identity by keeping their number and card safe to prevent loss or theft. Once they check their Social Security number when they start a job, suggest they put the card in a safe place, and not carry it with them.

You can get information about identity theft and what an employee needs to do from our leaflet Social Security-When Someone Misuses Your Number (Pub. No. 05-10064).

You can get a copy at our web site www.ssa.gov or by calling 1-800-772-1213.
