NEW! Announcing: NAB Adopts Assisted Living Administrator Certificate Programs

The National Association of Boards of Examiners of Long Term Care Administrators (NAB) has adopted CEUSite.com's Introductory Assisted Living Certification Program as a reference source for the Association's new RC/AL Examination for Residential Care/Assisted Living Administrators.

NAB has begun using this program as a bibliography and reference source for preparation and question writing for the exam. More information concerning the RC/AL Examination for Residential Care/Assisted Living Administrators can be found on NAB's website at http://www.nabweb.org/nabweb/common/examinations.aspx?id=50

In addition, the Assisted Living Certification Program meets the requirements to prepare to become an Assisted Living Administrator in many states, as well as state licensure/certification qualification where required.

If you are already an Administrator, this is a chance to sharpen your skills while obtaining 50 NAB/NCERS approved CEU's.

The American College of Healthcare Administrators has endorsed the program as the basis for implementing the Assisted Living Educational Initiative "promoting leadership excellence in assisted living".

The program is also approved for 3 hours of college credit at St. Joseph's College of Maine. Contact us for more information.

NEW! New Course:

"Improving Glycemic Control of CBC Residents" by David C. Hascall, RN, MSN, MS - Sun Retirement
6 credit hours

Diabetes is one of those chronic diseases that can be a complicated disease to manage; creating sudden and significant changes in acuity and therefore morbidity and mortality. There is compelling evidence however, that Diabetes complications can be prevented, and in many cases reversed if we develop a treatment plan that includes diet, medication, (for some), finger stick glucose testing, and exercise.

Identifying the markers for Diabetes, Hyperglycemia, Metabolic Syndrome, and Pre-Diabetes, could prevent millions of cases from advancing to a full Diabetes diagnosis. In the community based care setting nurses have an excellent opportunity to identify these residents with or without a diagnosis and work with them through a number of alternate living support arrangements. Among these are in-home care services, assisted living, and residential care. There is however, significant baggage that this effort brings with it to challenge the nursing professional. Old ways of thinking and treating even a mild elevation of blood glucose must change. Attitudes about insulin use and barriers to the movement of research into practice remain. This course traces the roots of Diabetes and encourages the learner through thought provoking scenarios and clinical pearls to change their thinking about where the best care for chronic diseases occurs. Detailed concept maps offer a graphic way to view Hyperglycemia and Diabetes and other key content information.

Background Checks:

The best defense against negligent hiring and retention lawsuits

A Tallahassee, Florida furniture company has been assessed a $2.5-million judgement because a deliveryman, who used a knife to attack a customer in her home, was hired negligently. Court documents indicate that the man had a history of violent crime.

A Kmart security officer cost his employer $3.8-million after he tackled and assaulted a customer who was returning a purchase. The guard's partially-completed employment application was key evidence for prosecutors. The man had been terminated from several previous jobs, but personnel directors at Kmart failed to look into the reasons he failed to fill out his application fully.

One of an employer's best defenses against negligent hiring and retention lawsuits is a simple background check. Because of the expense involved, and because laws, as they are currently written, make it risky for former employers to divulge "the whole truth and nothing but the truth," background checks are considered less than effective.

On the contrary, simply being able to verify basic information like job histories, employment dates, and compensation levels can weed out some of the most dangerous potential employees. These employees tend to misrepresent even common information, and sometimes go as far as faking certifications, licenses and educational credentials. When inconsistencies occur, they are generally the "tip of the iceberg," according to Los Angeles attorney, Jamie Johnson.

Background checks are a reasonable method for protecting your company from workplace violence, property destruction, and financial losses. Please contact a member of our Risk Management Team for more information.

One law firm requested a background check on a certain "attorney" who was applying for a position. Was the check a wise investment? Just ask the investigator who found that the applicant had never taken the bar exam!
